How to Wear a Silk Scarf: 8 Easy Styling Ideas

Three ways to style a silk scarf including a waist tie, ponytail scarf, and soft neck wrap

I’ve been playing around with these in-store lately and honestly, once you start styling a square scarf a few different ways, you realize how much mileage you can get from one piece.

Every time we bring scarves back in, someone asks how to wear them. The good news is they're much more versatile than most people think.

Our scarf selection changes often, but the styling ideas below work with the lightweight square scarves we bring in season after season.

Here are 8 simple ways we've been wearing them lately, all styled right here at Lemonberry.

Silk scarf tied neatly at the front of the neck with a knit top and jeans

1. The Classic Front Tie

Tied neatly at the front with a soft knot.

This one feels polished without feeling stiff. I like it with a simple knit because it adds just enough detail without taking over the outfit.

2. The Side Knot

Shift the knot slightly off-centre.

Same idea as the classic front tie, just a little more relaxed. It softens the neckline and feels less polished in a good way.

Square silk scarf tied at the waist over jeans as an alternative to a belt

3. The Waist Tie

Worn through the belt loops or tied at the hip.

This is one of my favourite ways to wear a scarf with denim. It adds colour and personality without adding another accessory.

4. The Soft Neck Wrap

Wrapped once around the neck and tied at the back with a loose drape.

This one feels cozy but still light. It works especially well with textured knits or a simple top when you want a softer neckline.

5. The Scarf Top

Folded and tied at the back.

Perfect for warm weather, vacations, patios, or layered under a lightweight blazer. It's a fun way to get even more wear out of a square scarf.

6. The Bag Tie

Wrapped around the handle of your bag.

This might be the easiest styling trick of the bunch. If you're not quite ready to wear a scarf, tie it onto your bag and call it a day.

Silk scarf wrapped around a low ponytail as a hair accessory

7. The Hair Tie

Wrapped into a low ponytail with the ends left long.

This is probably my favourite. It makes a basic ponytail feel intentional instead of looking like you're simply trying to get through Tuesday.

Silk scarf tied over the head and knotted at the back in a classic head scarf style

8. The Head Scarf

Tied over the head and knotted at the back.

This one leans a little more vacation energy, but paired with a simple outfit it works far more often than people expect.

One Simple Styling Rule

Don't fight the scarf.

If the print is bold, keep the rest of the outfit simple. Let the scarf do the talking.

A scarf is one of the easiest ways to change the look of an outfit without buying a whole new wardrobe. Tie it at your neck, in your hair, on your bag, or even at your waist and you'll be surprised how often you reach for it.
