How to Style a Flowy Skirt: 3 Easy Outfit Ideas

Three ways to style a flowy skirt using satin skirt outfits

We teamed up with Andrea from Play With Style Blog to show three completely different ways to style a skirt. Andrea is wearing a satin skirt in these looks, but the same outfit formulas work beautifully with pleated, soft A-line and other flowy midi skirts too.

1. Sweater + Sneakers

Pair a flowy skirt with a cozy sweater and sneakers for an easy everyday outfit. The sweater keeps the skirt from feeling too dressy, while sneakers make the whole thing practical for errands, lunch or a casual day out. If your sweater is longer, try a small front tuck so you can still see the waist of the skirt.

2. Go Dressier

Andrea paired her satin skirt with a satin button-down for a dressier look. With another flowy skirt, try the same idea with a blouse or dressier top. A shorter top, tucked blouse or defined waist usually gives a nice proportion with a midi skirt. Add heels or boots and simple jewellery when you want to take it up a notch.

3. Add a Blazer

A blazer gives a softer skirt some structure. Add a simple top and boots for an outfit that works for the office, dinner or anywhere you want to look a little more polished. If the blazer is oversized, keep the layer underneath fairly simple so the outfit doesn’t get bulky.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Satin

Satin looks beautiful in these photos, but that isn’t really the point. These three outfit formulas work with lots of skirts. Try them with a pleated midi, a soft A-line skirt or another flowy style already hanging in your closet. Think about the shape and proportion of the outfit rather than trying to recreate Andrea’s exact pieces.

  • Balance a softer skirt with texture. Knitwear, denim, cotton and wool all work well.
  • Watch the proportions. A defined waist can help when the skirt has lots of movement.
  • Change the shoes and change the outfit. Sneakers make it casual, boots add weight and a heel dresses it up.
