Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

Ways to Celebrate Earth Day
Earth Day is coming up on April 22nd — and if you're like me, you're always looking for small, meaningful ways to feel more connected to the planet. But let’s be honest: Earth Day can sometimes feel like a checklist of generic ideas (plant a tree, recycle, etc.). And while those are great starting points, I think we can do a little better — and make it a bit more us.
So I pulled together a few fun and easy Earth Day ideas that go beyond the basics. These are simple, feel-good ways to live more sustainably.

Start a Garden
Whether it’s a couple of herbs on your kitchen windowsill or a few veggie pots on your balcony, planting anything is a great way to reconnect with nature. It’s also amazing for pollinators like bees and butterflies, and honestly — digging in the dirt is a great stress reliever. You don’t need a green thumb, just a little sunlight and a watering can.

Plant for the Pollinators
Speaking of bees — let’s show them some love!
Planting pollinator-friendly flowers like wildflowers, zinnias, and calendula helps keep local ecosystems buzzing (literally). Herbs like thyme, basil, and lavender also attract bees and make your meals taste better. Win-win.

Upgrade Your Lightbulbs
It sounds so small, but switching to LED bulbs is actually a big deal. They use less energy, last longer, and save you money in the long run. It’s the kind of swap that doesn’t feel like a sacrifice — just a smart move for your home and the planet.

Let’s Talk Trees...
Yes, “plant a tree” is kind of the poster child of Earth Day — but it still matters. Just maybe let’s think about it differently.
If you don’t have space to plant one yourself, consider donating to a local tree-planting initiative like One Tree Planted. Or, better yet, gift a tree donation in someone’s name. Thoughtful and sustainable? Love that for us.

Support Your Local Farmers
Fresh, local produce just hits different. And when you shop at a farmers’ market, you’re supporting real people in your community. If you’re near Aurora, the Aurora Farmers' Market opens on May 3 — mark your calendar and bring your reusable bags!
Shop Sustainably (Starting with Your Closet)
You know I had to include this one. 😉
Shopping local and choosing sustainable pieces — like the ones we carry here at Lemonberry — is one of the easiest ways to reduce your fashion footprint. Check out our blog on capsule wardrobing. I always say: choose pieces you love, wear them often, and make them last. (Check out our Sustainable Fashion Collection if you haven’t already!)
Go Green at Home
Little habits make a big impact.
Turn off lights when you leave the room, unplug devices you're not using, wash your clothes in cold water, and shorten those showers. Every drop (and watt) counts.

Unplug for a Day
This one’s tough but worth it.
Spend a day offline and outside — take a walk in a forest (grounding), read a book, journal, garden, or just sit with a coffee in the sun. Being present with the Earth is a celebration all on its own.
A Few Little Extras
Here are a few more everyday swaps I swear by (or try to as much as possible):
- Use a reusable water bottle
- Choose products that come in glass or paper packaging instead of plastic.
- Bring your own shopping bags - Check out this tote!
- Say no to fast fashion — choose quality over quantity
- Rewear and restyle your wardrobe
So, what’s on your Earth Day list?
I’d love to know how you’re celebrating this year. Pop by Lemonberry in Aurora and chat with us — or share your ideas on Instagram and tag us @lemonberry_ca. Let’s inspire each other to make Earth Day more meaningful (and way less generic).
